Each conference the SCWC has a writing contest in which all conferees are invited to participate. The rules are simple: Write a piece in any form you wish of no more than 250 words based on the topic announced Friday night. The topic for the inaugural SCWC*PS conference was "Abroad" or "A Broad". Dodie Cross of Palm Desert, CA is this year's winning author.

A man, although, can make his way,
And might treat himself to a tryst;
Always respected, bowed to and such,
Whilst the broad abroad ceases to exist.
Iran for instance, was quite insane.
A mass of angry people hard to handle;
The male of the species is high on their list,
The broad, abroad, a step beneath the camel.
She must cover herself from eyeballs to toes,
Because this is the male referendum;
But a broad abroad says "phooey on this"
As the bird she discretely send 'em.
Thailand, ah Thailand, The Gulf of Siam,
A haven for the male of the species;
Gekos and cobras slide silently by,
Making this broad abroad quite queasy.
Alms to the monks were gladly received,
However, there was one stipulation;
You never touch a monk to offer your alms,
If you're a broad you could risk mutilation.
A broad abroad may not deem to touch,
A consecrated monk, by law;
She must first give her alms to the nearest male,
Avoiding a major faux pas.
Oh woe is me, it's tough to be
A broad abroad in this world.
These men don't kid me, they'd much rather be
In the broads' arms safely curled.
The moral of my story is easy to read,
For the broads going abroad today;
It's much wiser to stay at home you see
In the wonderful ole USA!
